That is why there are different organizations offering grants, bursaries, and scholarships to deserving students. A good example is the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, popularly known as NSFAS Funding. This was founded in 1999 to help students achieve their educational goals.

Now, this scheme allows students to apply for financial assistance that will allow them to attend public universities or TVET colleges. Over the years, however, the scheme came up with a system that makes it easier to apply and provides faster funding decisions. New NSFAS applicants, as well as current students, are encouraged to create their own MyNSFAS account. Thankfully, this is a simple process done through the following steps:

  • Navigate to the NSFAS website at www.nsfas.org.za. This is the official NSFAS website. 
  • Locate the tab named MyNSFAS and click on it. 
  • Click on Register, and tick the box that allows NSFAS to verify the details you provide 
  • Enter your ID number and full name as they appear on the ID document 
  • Enter your email address and confirm it 
  • Enter your phone number and a preferred password 
  • Upload a copy of your ID document and click on Register. An OTP will be sent to your phone which expires in 24 hours. 
  • Enter the OTP and click on Submit. 

That way, you have successfully created an account. To log in to your myNSFAS account, you will be required to go to the site at https://my.nsfas.org.za/ and input your username and password in their respective fields. Then, click on Sign In.

How do I change my NSFAS Login details?

If, for whatever reason, you need to make changes to your account details, this is possible via the online platform. 

  • Visit your MyNSFAS student portal and log in by entering your username and password. 
  • Click on Sign In. 
  • Once in, click on My Personal Details. Here, you can delete all the incorrect or outdated information and replace it with correct information. 
  • Then, click on Update your Details to save all the changes made to your login details.

How to unlock myNSFAS account? 

In the NSFAS account, you can access your NSFAS wallet. This feature allows you to withdraw cash or make purchases from any merchants registered with NSFAS. The allowance that you receive depends on your interaction with various institutions, which communicate with NSFAS when you register. However, you may find that when you try to access the account, you receive a message that says it’s locked. 

This may be the case if you inaccurately input your NSFAS Wallet password more than 3 times. Locking the account serves as a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to your account. To avoid this, ensure that you have your password memorized. 

If you are unable to access your account because it is locked, here’s how to unlock it. 

  • Login to your myNSFAS account using your username and password
  • Go to NSFAS Connect 
  • Create a case 
  • Use your phone to take a photo of your ID document and submit 
  • Enter your phone number 
  • State your case 

For first-time users, accessing the wallet is a simple process: 

  • Once you activate your NSFAS Wallet, you will receive a welcome SMS on your phone. 
  • Open this message and verify your account by dialing *134*176#
  • Also, reply to the message with your ID number 
  • After a while, you will receive a password. You need to use this password whenever you make a transaction.

What are the eligibility requirements for NSFAS funding? 

Before applying for the NSFAS funding, it is important to note that there are some requirements you need to meet to be found eligible. These requirements have been put in place to ensure that funds are allocated to students who sincerely need financial assistance. There is also a specific age requirement for NSFAS funding. Undergraduate students should be under the age of 35 at the time of their application. The age limit for postgraduate students is 40.

What are the documents required for the NSFAS application?

  • Copies of parents’/guardians’/spouse’s identification 
  • Proof of your income or IRP5 for one year

  • A signed and completed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form if you have been identified as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development.

How do I reset myNSFAS portal password? 

If you forget your password, it is possible to reset it on the portal. On the website, click on Forgot your Password and then input your ID number. You will receive an OTP on your registered phone number. Enter this OTP in its appropriate field and click on Submit. Then, enter your new password. 

How can I delete myNSFAS account? 

If you wish to delete your NSFAS account for whatever reason, then you will be required to make a written request and submit it to the NSFAS office. Alternatively, you can also email NSFAS to make this request.
