SASSA Caregiver Grant for Adults

Taking care of children with disabilities has taken a toll on many families in South Africa. The government, in a bid to help the caretakers, has come up with a care dependency grant as a solution to the financial problems. This grant offers a financial boost to enable the parents to take care of the children. However, there has been misinformation regarding the caregiver grant stating that it is offered for adults. It is important to note that the only available grants for adults offered by SASSA are the SRD grant, old age grant, and disability grant. Therefore, potential applicants need to be aware that there is no specific grant by the name ‘caregiver grant’. This article explains more on this and clarifies how the care dependency grant comes by.

SASSA Caregiver Grant for Adults

Lately, there has been misleading blogs that claim that SASSA is providing a caregiver grant for adults. It is important to note that SASSA has not announced any ‘caregiver grant for adults’ and emphasizes that the blogs are fake. The only grants available for adults are the disability grant, old age grant, and SRD grant.

However, there is a care dependency grant that is provided for families that have a severely disabled child. It takes a lot to take care of a child with a disability, hence, it is no surprise that many such families struggle financially. Often times, it becomes difficult or nearly impossible for the caretakers. Thankfully, the South African government has their needs in mind and this can be seen through provision of the grant. Besides financial comfort, the grant enables parents to properly take care of the kids. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware that the grant is available in the first place, nor how to apply for it. This often leads to rejection or late submission.

To receive the grant, new applicants can apply after the birth of the disabled child so they can start receiving the money. Every recipient receives a total amount of R2080 per month. This will help them cater for medicines, hospital bills, and other items. SASSA offers the grant until the child is 18 years.
